I mean, what mom doesn’t?
Big surprise — 60% of moms say not having enough time to do all the things is a major source of stress.
So what do you do?
Well, you could do what I used to do which is trying to juggle everything and end up burned out.
If that sounds like zero fun, lemme tell ya, it is.
Or you could make some small changes to your daily round.
That’s it. There’s no big lifestyle makeover you have to commit to boost your productivity.
Then here are my best (and simplest) tips to be more productive as a mom and a boss.
3 Tiny Tweaks That Lead to More Productive Days
1. Put It All In a Planner
Planners and notebooks are some of my favorite things ever.
I didn’t start using a planner for my business until a couple of years ago. And man, I wish I had done it sooner.
Being able to block out all my different to-dos has made life soooo much easier. I can open up my planner to any month and see what’s on deck daily and weekly.
If you don’t use a planner to manage your daily round, then go get one. Like now.
Open that sucker up and start adding in all the things you have to do for the month.
Seriously, everything and anything. For example, my monthly calender includes:
- Deadlines for all the stories I’m working on for the month
- Field trips, co-op dates and other school events
- Doctor’s appointments
- Phone calls I have to make
- Invoicing days
- Pitch days
- Vacations and staycations if someone’s coming to visit
- Fun events I plan on taking my kids to
Putting it all down in my planner means I don’t have to remember everything. I can just look at my planner to see what’s what.

2. Use Lists to Keep Tabs on Daily Tasks
A planner is the first part of the “more productive days” formula. Lists are the second.
I love to-do lists. They speak to the perfectionist nerd that lurks inside me.
And it’s a great feeling to be able to cross things off your list. It’s like yeah, I did a thing.
When you’re juggling household chores and kids and a spouse and maybe a business or pets, then doing a thing is huge. Even if it’s just a small thing.
So I’m all about keeping lists.
On Sundays, I grab my planner and open up to the section for the week ahead. Then for each day, I pencil in everything I have to do.
Writing things down in a to-do list makes me feel more connected to those tasks. It’s the best way I know to stay organized.
You could keep your to-do lists in the notepad app on your phone or on sticky notes or a dry erase board next to your fridge.
It doesn’t really matter; whatever system works for you is fine. It’s all about making the list and following it.
Getting into the habit of making lists can help you be way more productive because you essentially have a road map for your day to follow.
As you make your to-do list for each day of the week, rank each item based on what’s top priority for you. That way when it’s time to tackle your list for a specific day, you’ll automatically know what needs your attention first.
And I’ve said this before, but keep a done list to go with your to-do list.
Your done list is where you write down all the things you were able to accomplish for the day. Big things, little things — everything in-between.
So what’s the point of that?
Well, I’ve found that when I can look back and see what I was able to get done on any given day, it’s a big motivator.
I don’t need to second-guess myself on whether I can be more productive because my done list tells me that I already am.
Try keeping a to-do list and a done list for two to three weeks to see how the system works for you. You might be surprised at how much more productive you feel at the end of it.
3. Develop and Stick to a Routine
If you can pull it off though, having a routine and sticking with it consistently can be life-changing.
When my kids were babies I didn’t have much of a routine. I just kind of went with the flow because trying to keep up with a newborn and a toddler was exhausting.
Now my routine is baked into my days. I wake up at roughly the same time every day. Get a shower, get dressed, feed the dogs, make breakfast.
Then I get to work. I work until around noon, then have launch.
After that, we walk the dogs, read aloud (yeah, I still do that even though they’re 9 and 11), then homeschool.
If I don’t have any work to finish up, I’ll exercise or tidy up the house. Then it’s dinner time, bath time and hanging out with the kids until they go to bed.
After that, I work on blog stuff or read or occasionally veg out to one of my favorite TV shows.
My weekends look different because I don’t do any freelance-related stuff and my son has sports. But overall, there’s a definite rhthym our days follow.
How to create your perfect daily routine
If you don’t have a routine, then think about how you can create one and what it would ideally look like.
- Where do you focus your time?
- How do you break the day up?
- What takes the most or least time?
- Are there things you could cut out of your day that drain your time or energy?
- What do you want to make more time for each day?
Putting a routine in place can help you be more productive because you start to really pay attention to how you use your time.
You start saying to yourself, do I really have time for this? And is it worth the time I’d need to spend on it?
When you start whittling out the time-wasters, that frees you up to focus on what really matters most.
