Would you like to make an extra $1,000 a month?

Having that much extra each month might be huge, especially if you’re on a tight budget or your family’s income has taken a sudden hit.

You could use that money to pad your savings, pay down debt or just cover the bills until your financial situation improves. And at the very least, having extra money coming in can make you feel less anxious about your finances.

But how do you make an extra $1,000 a month and is it possible to do it without getting a real job?

If you’re looking for ways to make money without leaving home, I’ve got 10 ideas for you that are 100% legit.

You might try one of them or all of them but either way, they’re all ways to make extra money when you desperately need it.

1. Get paid to write

Freelancing is my main business and I know from experience that it’s possible to make an extra $1,000 a month and much more from writing.

You don’t necessarily need to have any professional experience to get started. Even writing your own blog can work in your favor for helping you land writing jobs.

Here are some of the ways you can get paid to write online:

  • Blogging for businesses and brands
  • Writing articles for websites
  • Ghostwriting books, blog posts and articles
  • Writing copy for sales pages or landing pages

Even if you’re a brand-new freelancer, you could easily make $50 an hour writing. Work 20 hours a month and you’ve got your extra $1,000.

If you don’t know where to start with freelancing, here are some resources that can help:

2. Become an online teacher

Teaching English online has become a popular way to make money but it’s not the only thing you can teach.

Outschool is an online teaching platform that allows you to create courses for kids K-12 on just about any topic. You don’t need a teaching degree to get started either.

There’s a background check involved and your course idea has to be approved but otherwise, it’s pretty easy to get started teaching with Outschool. According to the company, the average teacher makes $35 an hour.

At that rate, you’d need to spend around 30 hours teaching online every month. But since it’s up to you to decide what to charge for classes, you have some control over how many hours it’ll take to reach your $1,000 goal.

If you’re interested in getting paid to teach, register with Outschool now!

3. Offer virtual assistant services

A virtual assistant is essentially someone who helps business owners run their business.

As a virtual assistant, you might do things like:

  • Responding to emails or blog comments
  • Posting on social media
  • Managing Pinterest for your clients
  • Writing copy for sales brochures or landing pages
  • Scheduling appointments and virtual meetings

A virtual assistant can be a jack of all trades or specialize in one thing. For example, my friend Ashley at The Virtual Momma specializes in Pinterest management.

4. Sell your stuff

Chances are you’ve got some things around the house you could sell to make an extra $1,000. Whether you can do this every month depends on what you have but it’s a quick way to make some cash when you truly need it.

Ideas for things you can sell to make money include:

  • Books
  • Clothes
  • Kids’ toys
  • Sports equipment
  • Tools
  • Furniture
  • Home decor
  • Kitchen gadgets

You can sell locally through Facebook Marketplace or bargain groups. But if you’d rather do all your selling from home, these apps can help:

5. Open an Etsy shop

Etsy is the go-to online shopping spot for handmade and vintage items.

If you have some craft supplies around the house and a creative streak, you could set up an Etsy shop to make an extra $1,000 a month.

Some tips for successful selling on Etsy:

  • Take good photos of your items.
  • Write clear descriptions.
  • Include keywords so your items turn up in search more often.
  • Communicate promptly with shoppers and buyers.
  • Do your research to get an idea of what sells best and what people are shopping for.

7. Sell printables

Printables are big business and you could easily make $1,000 a month selling them online. Sarah Titus has built a million-dollar business selling printables through her Shopify store.

There are so many different printables you can create using a program like Canva or even Google Slides. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Home management printables
  • Budgeting and money management printables
  • Checklists
  • Devotionals
  • Educational printables

Educational printables are in-demand when schools are out and parents need ways to keep kids busy. If you want to try your hand at those, you can set up a shop and sell them on Teachers Pay Teachers.

8. Become an online researcher

Online research jobs essentially pay you money to find answers to questions people ask the most. Sites like Wonder pay you to do things like gather statistics, study industry trends and recommend products or services.

According to Wonder, researchers who are most active can earn around $2,000 a month from home. So even if you don’t have a lot of time to spare you could still make an extra $1,000 a month for answering questions.

User testing is a similar money-making gig that pays you cash for your time. You test websites and then report back on what you liked or didn’t like about it.

It’s an easy way to make $500, $1,000 or more every month just for answering questions. Check out a site like UserTesting to learn what it’s all about.

9. Create and sell a course for adults

Outschool is all about teaching kids but you can also create and sell courses for adults.

There are so many platforms that make it easy to do this. Two of my favorites are Teachable and Skillshare.

The great thing about selling courses online is that you don’t have to make them live. You can create a self-paced course, list it for sale on a teaching platform and reap the rewards when people purchase it.

This is a good way to make passive income from home, leaving you time to try other money-making ideas. For example, you could create a course and price it at $100. You’d just need to sell 10 every month to make an extra $1,000.

Some tips for creating an online course that sells:

  • Choose a topic that you know well and that people want to learn about.
  • Make your course detailed but don’t make it overwhelming.
  • Keep your the course interesting and engaging.
  • Write a great description that includes keywords and convinces people to buy it.
  • Answer any questions students have promptly.

10. Start a blog

Blogging is a competitive landscape and it seems like everybody and their dog has one these days. But if you don’t, you might consider starting one of your own.

Many bloggers are making five, six and in some cases, seven figures from their blogs. You don’t have to set your sights that high in the beginning but with the right plan, you could get to a point where you make an extra $1,000 a month consistently.

The main ways to make money blogging include:

  • Ads
  • Sponsored posts
  • Affiliate sales
  • Selling your own products
  • Offering a service through your blog

This blog, for example, makes money through ads and affiliate sales. My freelance writing services make money separate from blogging.

The way you choose to try and make money blogging is up to you and some methods work better than others, depending on your blog topic and niche.
