10 Ways to Make an Extra $1,000 a Month (From Home!)

1. Get paid to write

make money freelance writing

Freelancing is my main business and I know from experience that it’s possible to make an extra $1,000 a month and much more from writing.

You don’t necessarily need to have any professional experience to get started. Even writing your own blog can work in your favor for helping you land writing jobs!

Here are some of the ways you can get paid to write online:

  • Blogging for businesses and brands
  • Writing articles for websites
  • Ghostwriting books, blog posts and articles
  • Writing copy for sales pages or landing pages

Even if you’re a brand-new freelancer, you could easily make $50 an hour writing. Work 20 hours a month and you’ve got your extra $1,000!

If you don’t know where to start with freelancing, here are some resources that can help:

I also have another blog where I write in more detail about freelancing writing and how to make $1,000 a month or more doing it. You can head there and check out my free 6-day email course that teaches you the basics of freelancing!

2. Become an online teacher

Teaching English online has become a popular way to make money but it’s not the only thing you can teach.

Outschool is an online teaching platform that allows you to create courses for kids K-12 on just about any topic. You don’t need a teaching degree to get started either!

There’s a background check involved and your course idea has to be approved but otherwise, it’s pretty easy to get started teaching with Outschool. According to the company, the average teacher makes $35 an hour.

At that rate, you’d need to spend around 30 hours teaching online every month. But since it’s up to you to decide what to charge for classes, you have some control over how many hours it’ll take to reach your $1,000 goal.

3. Offer virtual assistant services

Before I became a freelancer I was a virtual assistant.

A virtual assistant is essentially someone who helps business owners run their business.

Sounds simple, right? As a virtual assistant, you might do things like:

  • Responding to emails or blog comments
  • Posting on social media
  • Managing Pinterest for your clients
  • Writing copy for sales brochures or landing pages
  • Scheduling appointments and virtual meetings

A virtual assistant can be a jack of all trades or specialize in one thing. For example, my friend Ashley at The Virtual Momma specializes in Pinterest management.

woman creating printables to sell

Printables are big business and you could easily make $1,000 a month selling them online. Sarah Titus has built a million-dollar business selling printables through her Shopify store.

That’s crazy, right? But if she can do it, so can you.

There are so many different printables you can create using a program like Canva or even Google Slides. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Home management printables
  • Budgeting and money management printables
  • Checklists
  • Devotionals
  • Educational printables

Educational printables are in-demand when schools are out and parents need ways to keep kids busy. If you want to try your hand at those, you can set up a shop and sell them on Teachers Pay Teachers.

8. Become an online researcher

Whenever you have a question, where do you go?

Duh, the obvious answer is Google. But did you know that you can get paid to answer questions?

Online research jobs essentially pay you money to find answers to questions people ask the most. Sites like Wonder pay you to do things like gather statistics, study industry trends and recommend products or services.

According to Wonder, researchers who are most active can earn around $2,000 a month from home. So even if you don’t have a lot of time to spare you could still make an extra $1,000 a month just for answering questions.

User testing is a similar money-making gig that pays you cash for your time. You test websites and then report back on what you liked or didn’t like about it.

It’s an easy way to make $500, $1,000 or more every month just for answering questions. Check out a site like UserTesting to learn what it’s all about.

9. Create and sell a course for adults

Outschool is all about teaching kids but you can also create and sell courses for adults.

The great thing about selling courses online is that you don’t have to make them live classes. You can create a self-paced course, list it for sale on a teaching platform and reap the rewards when people purchase it.

It’s a simple way to make passive income from home, leaving you time to try other money-making ideas.

For example, you could create a course and price it at $100. You’d just need to sell 10 every month to make an extra $1,000!

Some tips for creating an online course that sells:

  • Choose a topic that you know well and that people want to learn about.
  • Make your course detailed but don’t make it overwhelming.
  • Keep your the course interesting and engaging.
  • Write a great description that includes keywords and convinces people to buy it.
  • Answer any questions students have promptly.

There are so many platforms that make it easy to set up and sell your online courses. Two of my favorites are Teachable and Thinkific.

Both charge a fee to use but if you use this link you can try Thinkific free for 30 days!

10. Start a blog

It seems like everybody and their cat has a blog these days. But if you don’t, you might consider starting one of your own!

Many bloggers are making five, six and in some cases, seven figures from their blogs. So there’s definite money-making potential.

You don’t have to set your sights that high in the beginning but with the right plan, you could get to a point where you make an extra $1,000 a month consistently.

The main ways to make money blogging include:

  • Ads
  • Sponsored posts
  • Affiliate sales

Make $1,000 a month pet-sitting

Are you a dog person or a cat person?

We have both at our house but I definitely prefer the dog. She’s much less judgy than the cat.

If you’re looking for a low-key side hustle where you can get paid to play with dogs or cats, pet-sitting could be a perfect fit.

As a pet-sitter, you could make money watching other peoples’ pets while their owners are away. Or you could pick up extra cash as a dog-walker.
