Making passive income is great if you want to earn money on autopilot.

There are plenty of side hustles that don’t require a lot of work to maintain once you get them started. Here are some of the best ways to start generating passive income.

31. Make money with peer to peer lending

If you have some extra money to spare you could earn cash with peer to peer lending.

Real estate crowdfunding is another passive way to make money online.

The short and simple version works like this:

  • You open an account with a real estate crowdfunding platform

  • Your investment makes money through rental income, appreciation or both

Real estate crowdfunding is a great way to make extra money since you can own property investments without being a landlord.

If you’re interested in leveraging crowdfunded real estate to make money, check out the offerings available from PeerStreet.

Creating a CD ladder keeps your savings accessible and it can help you keep up with changing interest rates. Check out the CD options available from CIT.

36. Refinance your student loans

Student loan debt can take a toll on your budget. If you’re ready to ditch your debt and save money on interest, refinancing can put cash back in your pocket.

Refinancing student loans or other types of debt can lower your interest rate. The less you pay in interest, the more of your payment goes toward the principal.

You could then take the difference and invest it to generate passive income.

If you’re interested in how much refinancing could save you, head to Earnest to get a free quote.

37. Cut your credit card debt

Credit card interest can cost you money but slashng your rates can help you make some of it back.

You’ll need Canva or Canva Pro and a way to deliver your templates. (Again, I love Convertkit for email.)

64. Become a personal shopper

We live in a small town with a lot of seniors. So one way I’ve seen people making extra money is hiring themselves out as personal shoppers and errand-runners.

With people gradually getting back into travel, now could be a great time to make money as an Airbnb host!

Whether you have a spare room or an entire house to rent out, this could be an easy side hustle idea to make extra money on the side.

Just remember to check the local ordinances where you live, since some cities have banned Airbnb and other short-term rentals.

And don’t forget that like other side hustle income, you’ve got to pay taxes on the money you make!

68. Rent out your driveway

Don’t want to rent out your house or spare room?

Try renting out your driveway instead!

69. Housesit

Housesitting can be a great side hustle idea to try if you want a relatively low-impact way to make money.

If you’re looking for housesitting gigs, check out Housesitter.com. It’s like the Rover of housesitting jobs.

You can create a profile, check out listed housesitting gigs and apply for jobs all in one place.

70. Clean houses

My mom cleaned houses when I was a kid. This was one of many side jobs she had over the years as a single mom.

If you’re a clean freak type or at least have an eye for detail, you could make money cleaning houses.

There are a few ways to find gigs.

First, you could apply for a job with a maid or cleaning service. But this usually means working their schedule and earning a set hourly wage.

Another option is to hire yourself out as a housekeeper in your spare time.

For example, we live in a beach community where people rent oceanfront homes all summer. So a lot of locals side hustle doing cleaning jobs for the rental companies between check-ins.

This way, you can work on your schedule. And you can set your own rates so you have control over what you earn!

71. Get paid to sew

Got sewing skills?

I definitely don’t but if you do, you could easily make money doing alterations in your spare time.

For example, you could tailor suits, hem prom dresses or make a few bucks repairing zippers and replacing buttons.

72. Become a notary

Being a notary is one of the most overlooked side hustle ideas in my opinion.

I mean, nobody thinks about notaries until they need one right?

Becoming a notary is different in every state but it usually involves filling out an application and passing an exam.

And once you’ve been certified as a notary, you could easily earn $15 an hour or more on average for your services!

73. Try personal training

Everybody wants to be in better shape. And personal trainers can provide the motivation you need to get moving when you just don’t feel like it.

If you’ve got a passion for fitness, you could start a side hustle as an in-home or virtual personal trainer.

The requirements aren’t that difficult either; you have to pass an exam and meet some other guidelines to get certified.

From there, you can start offering your services as a trainer in clients’ homes or set up a website to train clients online!

74. Get paid to clean pools

I have a pool. And I hate cleaning that thing.

So I pay someone else to do it.

I don’t know exactly what my pool guy makes but based on what I pay and the number of clients he has, I’m guessing it’s easily several thousand dollars a month.

And did I mention it takes him about an hour to do the job each time?

If you’re familiar with how to balance pool chemicals and you know how to handle a leaf skimmer and vacuum, cleaning pools could be a profitable side hustle to try.

75. Get paid to stage homes

How to Make Extra Money at Your Job

So far, I’ve given you plenty of side hustle ideas to choose from to make money on the side.

But if you’re already working a 9 to 5, there are some things you can do to try and squeeze out some extra income.

Here are some ways to pick up extra money on the job.

136. Enroll in your 401(k) plan if you haven’t yet

If your company offers a 401(k) or a similar retirement plan that offers matching contributions, you could be missing out on free money if you’re not enrolled.

A lot of employers offer automatic 401(k) plan enrollment these days. But if yours doesn’t, reach out to your HR department to find out how to sign up.

Then, contribute at least enough into the plan each payday to get the full company match.

This could be the easiest extra money you’ll ever make. And you can sleep better at night knowing you’re building retirement savings for the future.

137. Check your benefits package for other ways to make extra money

Aside from your 401(k), you might have some other options for getting free money at work.

For example, if your company offers a high deductible health plan you might be able to sign up for a Health Savings Account.

HSAs let you set aside money on a tax-advantaged basis for health care costs. And some employers will match what you put in.

Just like with your 401(k), that’s free money. So if you have an HSA at work, it’s worth looking into whether you should sign up.

You could also get free money at work if your employer offers things like wellness plans, life insurance or discounts on certain servicers, like home loans or car loans.

Those won’t let you earn money directly but they can save you money, which is just as good.

138. Ask for a raise

A more direct way to make extra money at work is to ask for it.

Asking for a raise can be tricky but if done correctly, it could lead to a bump in pay.

These tips can help you ask for a raise successfully.

139. Try for a promotion

Getting promoted is another way to increase your earnings at work and make more money.

Just like asking for a raise, getting promoted can have its challenges. And making more money might also mean taking on more responsibility, so you need to be prepared for that.

Developing the right habits at work can help improve your chances of getting promoted. Glassdoor has a great guide on the best habits to develop as an employee.

140. Increase your hours to make extra money

If you’re an hourly employee, a shorter way to get to bigger paychecks might just be increasing your hours.

This, of course, depends on whether your employer can afford to do that.

But if you can earn some overtime above your regular pay rate, you could see a nice jump in your paychecks.

Talk to your direct supervisor about whether it’s possible to pick up extra hours.

141. Earn money with referral bonuses

If your company is always on the lookout for new talent, it’s possible you could make extra money with referral bonuses.

This is one of those side hustle ideas you may not know exists but it’s worth checking out with your employer. You may be able to pick up bonuses worthe several thousand dollars for referring a new employee.

142. Consider a part-time job instead

If you’ve tapped out all the best money-making or money-saving perks in your employee benefits package and getting a raise, promotion or more hours is out of the question, there’s one more way to make extra money.

Getting a part-time job may not be ideal. But if you’re in dire financial straits it’s an option to consider when you need to make money fast.

Just keep the time commitment in mind versus what you can earn. If a part-time job takes up a lot of your time and doesn’t pay all that great, you might be better off exploring some of the side hustle ideas included here instead.
